Better Bottles - Flavor Memory?

Fri Apr 10, 2009 3:01 am

Hey All,

One of my brewing goals is to get out of the plastic buckets I have been using to date. I have been looking at the Better Bottles (6 Gallon) as a cheaper (and potentially safer) alternative to glass carboys.

My biggest concern with BB's is the gas permeability and the "flavor" memory the PET plastic might have (which is a problem in the buckets). BB's website claims no "flavor scalping" and minimal O2 permeability, but I wanted to ask other homebrewer's experienced. Has anyone used a BB for extremely long secondary/conditioning periods (6+ Months) with any trouble?

Thanks - I appreciate the feedback.

I've never had a problem with BB's... as good as glass IMHO, but safer.

I've been using a couple of them for a while now and haven't had any problems with them

They work great. You just don't want to do any long time aging in them, say more than a month.

PBW soak for a couple days and they are completely clean with no odor.

I'll continue to beat the horse.

I'm new to the bottles (6 batches in them). No issues to date.
