Turkey deep fryer as a wort boiler??

Sat Feb 21, 2009 5:40 pm

Since most turkey deep fryers are stainless steel with a pretty big capacity, and most sets come with their own burner set-up . . .could it be used to boil the wort??

As long as the pot is big enough for your batch size. I ended up getting a larger kettle to go with my turkey fryer setup

Get one with an oil drain spigot; you can repurpose it for sparge or wort draining without much modification.

Great. I bought The Big Easy non-oil deep fryer...works like a convection oven but does take longer to cook a 15lb turkey..about 2.5 hours...which is all beside the point. I'll have to check out Lowe's now :)

Do you want an easy ways to tell if the turkey is big enough or how many gallons it will hold. do the math, radius squared X depth (height) divided by 231. There are 231 cubic inches in a gallon. :D I got that from a boy scout  .

What type of turkey fryer are we talking about here?

LP? They work awsome. at 6 gallons you need to be real careful to monitor for boilovers.

Electric? see this thread: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=11821

I purchased an electric turkey fryer. Works great for prepping 3-4 gallons of mash/sparge water. 155 - 170F range. Although it will hold 5 gallons, it can't produce a good boil with the lid off.

Some turkey fryers are aluminum and that works too, there is a conditioning process for an aluminum pot however.
