Different take on chill plate

Sun Feb 22, 2009 1:10 pm

Here is an idea that I was wondering if anyone has tried. I have 20 cases of misc homebrews in my basement and dont have enough fridge space for a huge variety. Sometimes people come over and want to sample something that I do not have chilled. I was thinking of taking a chill plate for draft beer and adapt it with a funnel as the input. Then I could pour a bottle of beer into the funnel and it would come out chilled on the other end. Would I be wasting my time on this or should I just by a bigger fridge? My real question is will the beer spend enough time in the chill plate being fed by gravity to chill it to drinking temp?

You could always get another mash tun and use it as a <gasp> cooler!

The Mythbusters chilled some warm beer pretty quickly in an ice/saltwater bath. I have done that on several occasions. It works in 15-20 min. If you can't entertain your thirsty friends with 15-20 min of conversation - then maybe you should take a toastmasters class, or find some more patient friends.

If money is no object - they proved that you can do the same in a minute or two with a CO2 fire extinguisher. 8)
