I had to play with the connections also, but this was due to a leak as the ferrule was cocked during installation.

As for the performance, if you use a whirlpool, this really is a mute point. Keep the smaller one for a pre-chiller as mentioned earlier. I send my whirlpooling wort through my pre-chiller in an ice bath, and once my wort is below the tap water temp, I turn off the water source and let the wort going thru the pre-chiller do the rest of the cooling to lager temps. I works great if your pump doesn't mind the added restrictions of pammping thru the 25' of copper.
