home depot water filter, what kind?

Tue Dec 16, 2008 9:51 pm

I have horrible water, and I've read about people getting a water filter from home depot for around $40. Does anyone have any suggestions on what type to get. I live in an apartment and may move, so I don't want to do any plumbing, something simple and easily removed is what I'm looking for. thanks.

I use the same housing, but with a clear filter section. I also use two of them. In the first I replaced the original cartridge with a high quality pre-filter cartridge, rather than the normal carbon/prefilter one it comes with. That way I pull the junk out (I have a well with sediment) before it hits the more expensive carbon filter.

You can lay it all out and mount it on a board, use piping straps to hold it in place, and it is then "portable" when you move.

I have the same username on HBT, and pictures of the plumbing setup I use in my gallery there.

Also, check out the RV section of your local Wal-Mart. I've seen portable activated carbon water supply filters that can attach to a sink faucet with a standard garden hose adapter. Right next to it were the potable grade water hoses to hook it all up. I'm a renter myself and I'm thinking I could hook this up to the cold water tap for the washing machine!

Check out...

...they normally cater to marine aquarium people, but they have a really good selection, from very simple to very complicated.

About all you can get at Home Depot is carbon and particulate filters and not much choice of either.

If you have really horrible water, you may want to strip it down to nothing and add back the stuff you need.
