charcoal filter

I've been filtering my water with one of them there charcoal filters from morebeer but am wondering if I need to sanitize this thing ever. Can stuff start growing in this thing?

Left to sit long enough - any microbes present can multiply, mainly post filter. As long as the water is used pre-boil it won't matter.
