Aquarium pump and sanitation

Sun Aug 31, 2008 9:08 am

I use to aerate my wort and my starters with an airpump, a stainless aeration stone and a sterile filter (bought from morebeer). The hose is silicone-rubber, so I boil the stone and the hose, but the filter which is connected to the hose stays just outside the pot during boiling. But: After I made the starter yesterday, I discovered that some wort or foam had stayed in the hose between the pump and the filter and it smelled mouldy.

Am I in deep shit now? Should I discard the starter or can I trust the filter?

Is there a good way to ensure that the filter is clean? Put it in starsan?

If the filter has the blue ring on it, you can autoclave it in a pressure cooker. If it's all white, I hink you have to toss it.

Everthing is probably ok. If I understand your story properly - you boiled the stone (I guess attached to the tubing. The old wort that must have been left in the stone probably got up to 180 if you boiled long enough. Sanitize a thief or eydropper and pull a sample from the starter. If it does not have any tartness to it, then proceed as normal.

Is this one of those small hepa 2 micron filters? I personally would get some new tube and a new filter. The small hepa filters are only an Euro or so. Chuck it. If it is some other more expensive type then you may have to contact the manufacture.

Thanks a lot! I'll test the starter, will probably step it up tomorrow. And get one filter that I can boil. Where can I get the blue one?

B3 carries both reusable and disposable filters. I cant find the resuable one on the web site but I have seen them there before.
