Mill choices

Fri Aug 22, 2008 12:28 pm

Can any one help me with a grain mill. I have narrowed it down to two, the Barley Crusher MaltMill, or the Monster mill. Any input on either? I like that the Barley crusher comes with a hopper but that is no a selling point.. Any input is welcome !!!!

Thanks
Tim

This comes up pretty often. I think most people who have mills are happy with their purchase. Personally, I have a crank and stein and love it. I have friends with the Schmidling Malt Mill, Barley Crusher, and assorted others, everyone likes theirs. I think you'll be happy with either, but take a look at the mills and really ask if they fit you future plans, i.e. easy to motorize, usable with a hand crank or hand drill, easy to add a bigger hopper, etc.

Good luck which ever one you choose, I'm sure you'll love it!

Oh, and option two is to try to win the one they are giving away on the Sunday Session.

I've got the Barley Crusher and it works fine. I slap a cheap drill on that mofo and go for it.

If you also use BeerSmith, you get a pretty decent price on the Barley Crusher through them: http://www.beersmith.com/barley_crusher.htm

A friend and I built motrized mills using the same motor and different mills. He went with a Crankandstein 3-roller and I went with the Monster Mill 3-roller. I prefer the adjustment mechanism on the crankandstein as it clicks into position whereas the Monster Mill has no set points. It seems harder to get the MM roller dialed in. Not really a big deal.

The nice thing about the MM is that it is bigger than the CnS.
