Sooting from Wok Burners

Tue Jun 16, 2009 1:50 pm

Howdy all. I'm slowly piecing together a Brutus.
I fired up the boil kettle burner this weekend, and while amazed that I'm finally close to having 'er done, was dismayed at the massive amount of soot produced. The bottom of my kettle and stand were covered in black. I rigged together some fittings in order to use the hose from a high pressure regulator. (From my old Banjo Cooker). Could that be the problem? My burners are about 3.5-4 inches from the bottom of the kettle, not sure if that's a factor. With the gas valve fully open orange flames crept up the sides of my kettle, seems like way to much orange not enough blue.

Any suggestions?
Many thanks!

There low pressure burners with the appropriate regulator, BUT I took the line off my old high pressure regulator which I think may be the problem.
I noticed some folks (and the original plans) use the yellow flex line which I'm going to try tonight. /There's a valve in my old gas line (from the high pressure regulator) with a teeeny tiny gas passage; I think the burners are starved. This would also explain why after 45 min 14 gallons of water only got up to 170...

I'll try the flex line tonight and report back...

Yellow flame is an indication of not enough air. Can you adjust the air intake?

No.. On the wok burners there's no air inlet/damper type thing like on the banjos....

The culprit was the high pressure hose I was trying to recycle from my old setup.
Replaced with yellow flex line, and now the son of a gun gets hot enough to burn a hole through my back porch ceiling...
