Submitting an Article

Hey Gang, I need some advice. I have attempted to submit some pictures and descriptions of some of my brew sculptures to BYO magazine. I have built a home bar with a home built refridgerator in it big enough to handle two full size kegs. This item was constructed out of some new but mostly old and recycled materials Now, since I'm not in the air conditioning or refridgeration field and only a thumb banging backyard carpenter at best, I thought I pulled off a feat worthy of running up the flagpole so to speak. As a regular reader of their magazine I often go directly to the section where they feature "Brewerys That Make You Drool" . Is it just me or has that section lacked some of it's shine lately? I had also, along with a friend, built a three tiered ten gallon brewery that is portable and contains a little bar sink in it. This last item was constructed primaraly with old metal bedframes and recycled steel. Yet these are good looking items in anyones book! I guess I'm just haveing trouble convincing the staff at BYO. I submitted my stuff via EMAIL to the assistant editor Garrett Heaney yet it seems it wasn't long before I turned into "Old News"! What is up with THAT? I sure that I'm not the only one that enjoys looking over someones handywork. Anyone have an opinion on this? Is there some other approach that I should concider? I drop him a note now and again to light the candle of hope but it just seems a bit too windy to keep his interest. Someone tell me, how should I proceed.

Ok for real I haven't been to impressed with any of those sections of BYO for a while. Your stuff sounds pretty cool. I would love to see it. I have no idea how to get the editors to publish your stuff tho. I would think how well written the article part was would have a lot to do with it tho. If you know anyone who is a good writer maybe have them take a look at the written part and see if they have any suggestions for making it stand out. I'm not trying to say your a bad writer (I'm lucky to form full sentences), but there is a difference between something written well and something that really pops off the page at you. Just a thought. Good luck and I hope to see it in print.

Your probably right on the money with your advice Travis. I'll try to resubmitt my little bit with more attention on the text. I don't know why they would drag their feet on such an issue, I had submitted a couple of questions to the "brew wizard" if your familiar with that, and THEY were printed and answered. I guess they have a dumpload of submissions to wade through so they can mearly pick from the pile which may be rather deep at this point. So who knows? I've been working with AOL attempting to add pics to my existing web page but there seems to be some problems that prevents that as well. Not to worry, I'll show it off some way. Thanks for your advice though!

I think Travis has it right with Naked Ladies... that and cash.... OOOh wait, have a naked lady deliver the submission in person with CASH! Kind of like a stripper giving a rebate....

And you're right about the recent submissions lacking any special flavor. My Chest Freezer conversion to a Keggerator is simple, straightforward, and much cooler than the crappy one I saw there a few months ago.

Yours sounds way cooler than mine....

Getting your stuff noticed by the editors is probably a crap shoot since I'm sure they get tons of submissions. You are better off just putting pics up somewhere and then posting links on forums like this. If your goal is just to show off your handywork, that would be the way to go. I know I would like to see what you've done.

I have to say, if I were an editor and someone "sumitted me an artical" it'd probably go in the round file PDQ.
