That is an interesting idea... However, the traditional design of the two items is contradictory. Grants need to be open, and not pressurized. Hopbacks need to be closed to minimize post boil contamination and hot side aeration.... This needs more discussion.

As I am thinking this through, the use of a grant adds yet another flow rate adjustment that makes this whole design seem less appealling. Does anybody think that some sort of float switch or valve that would get us back to two valves to adjust? I think it would suck to have the grant overflow, or get sucked dry. I'm thinking of something like the automatic filler on my pool - but I would be concerned that any bits of husk that got through the false bottom would stick the valve open.

Screw the grant... maybe just add shit load of rice hulls to the mash and rake the top? Do the big boys use a grant? What to do, what to do... How say you, BN army?

At TBC we dont use a grant-it is a older system though but seems to work well. However, my buddy that brews at Right brain brewery does use one, but his system is a newer more efficient setup. His has a float valve in it along with a manual empty option as well. So i guess it just depends on the setup.

I think I am going to try it without the grant first and see how it goes, then if need be, add the grant, shouldnt be that hard right?

When you going to make it out to California, Thirsty? Looks like I'm brewing twice in the next couple weeks.

Can someone explain how a B3 system doesn't have a grant and why that works? If I continue to batch sparge and employ a pump between the mash and the boil kettle will it be more of an issue or less? Why can't we control the flow with ball valves?

Thanks.

Well, I have been to CA once in my life, and that was to visit relatives. Unfortunately, they now live in Wisconsin... so I don't know that I will be making the west coast trip anytime soon. :( Although I may try to make it for an anniversary show one year (not this year... all my money is allocated to a wedding and a failing house).

I dont use a grant and dont see the need for one. The only way I'd see needing a grant is if you frequently lose the prime on your pumps and want to eliminate that. My system works just smashing without it. extra crap to fabricate, IMO.....

Do you just control the flow with ball valves then?
