Aromatic Malt Impact?

Mon Jan 02, 2012 5:45 pm

Yesterday I brewed a hybrid version of Jamil's Belgian Tripel, which calls for 14 lbs of Continental Pilsener Malt and 1/4 pound of Aromatic Malt. As is often the case lately, I wasn't paying attention and accidentally added 1 lb of Aromatic Malt instead.

How much of an impact will the additional 3/4 lb make on the end product?

Thanks,
Scott

It will have a lot more dark toasty notes from the extra aromatic. If it were a neutral yeast, I'd say it would taste like a maibock or a non-caramelly oktoberfest.

With the higher esters and phenolics of a tripel yeast, who knows? It may offset the yeast character and give you something more middle of the road.

I am sure you will be fine, although it might be a bit overly malty for a tripel depending on where it dries to with the extra 12 oz of aromatic added. Besides a darker color you will probably notice a deeper malt aroma and heavier malt taste than is characteristic of a tripel.
