My first Brew day in 28 years

Mon Jul 27, 2009 2:57 am

Today is my first brew day in 28 years... That is if a yeast starter counts as a brew.

I smuggled home a brew kit from London as a kid and brewed it in the basement. That was my last brew day.

I boiled 60 grams of light DME in a 3000 ml Erlenmeyer flask with 600 ml of water. I also added a cap of yeast nutrient and a couple drops of foam control. I boiled it for 15 minutes and cooled it in a water bath. I pitched a smack pack of Wyeast 1056 American Ale yeast and used an oxygen tank to add back some oxygen. I covered it in foil and placed it in a temperature controlled small refrigerator set to 69 degrees.

I hope to step it up in a day or two with 2000ml of wart if this first stage seems to be working. I want to get up to a 3000ml starter for a 9 gallon batch of a low gravity beer that I plan on fermenting in two corny kegs.

I am very nervous... Not just because by the minute I am the proud papa of millions of new yeast babies... There might have been some Star San in the tube that I used to add the oxygen to the yeast and wort. Though I mixed it by the directions I hope that a bit of Star San water does not mess with my starter. I have been researching and building my system for 4 months and I really want this to work.

A small amount of starsan should be no problem at all. Rock on soldier.

Thanks Steve. I appreciate the reassurance. I can't wait to see some activity in the beaker.

Don't fear the foam!

Small amounts of star-san won't affect the taste or outcome in any way. I've even read that it's supposed to be a yeast nutrient in that amount.

Freddy, I've said it before, but the most important thing will be to get another batch fermenting before this one is ready to drink!

Great news. I will not fear. Very handy invention if you ask me.

Very good point. It is going to take all my will power to avoid just slamming down this first batch in a couple shot glasses. :aaron
