OK. I guess I'll try boiling my balls. That's so LunchMeet. I also replaced all of my hoses. Even more LunchMeet-ish.

I think I might have found another issue. It seems that it could be the hop bill. I'm going to try to find some people that might know the flavors that can be made by the combo that I have in there. FYI, I used 1oz Saaz and 1oz Pearle for bittering, 2ozAmarillo for flavor and 2ozCascade for aroma. I don't know if that will help any. I've used this combo for 2 of the three beers that have had this flavor. *shrug* I guess I have a lot more to learn about flavors and stuff like that.

If you've only used it for 2 of the 3, then It's probably not it. Was the 3rd Hop Bill close to the same?

I would either take a bottle into your LHBS if they're any good, or send one to someone who can tell you more, and that's not me. Maybe a Beer Judge in our forum? I wouldn't just send it in to the show, since it takes a while for them to get to your beer, understandably.

Lastly, just the obvious, replace anything else that could harbor bacteria that you are re-using, like if you're fermenting in plastic, etc.

Also, and you already know this I think, you should not use a garden hose for your water supply.

Other than ALL OF THESE suggestions for everyone, try to brew a different beer and see if it persists. If so, throw your shit away and make prison wine instead...

Why not use a garden hose? Even one that is "drinking safe"? I have to use my out side hose bibs for water as the in house water goes through a soft water filter....

Thanks

I'm actually going to take the ball valve from my boil kettle and boil it as well as I found some seriously baked on wort in there (read-boiled up sugar that burned...filled the threads between the coupler and the valve itself) So, i'm going to boil all my kettle parts (not going to be brewing beer for a wee bit on my system, most of my fermenters will be full of Mead for wedding favors).

Tim,

Most Garden Hoses are made with cheaper plastic and they add a plastic taste to the water, and thus the beer. If you are using a high quality marine type hose you are probably OK, but instead I just made my own with tubing and a Female Hose Bib connector from my local hardware store, hook that up to the carbon filter and then another hose out to a homemade pot filler (hook made of copper tubing) to fill my pots. Works great.

I was happy go lucky brewer with no problems for 8 yrs, until I moved to the water shithole of America. Then came a slew of issues: astringincy, harsh off flavors, bad batches due to chloramine, pepper off flavors. It was freakin terrible!

Then I bought a nice water filter, and I haven't had much problems since. I highly recommend using filtered water.

This may not be your issue, but food for thought.

It's just as bad in Kansas as Iowa. I've done a brew in both and had to filter since.

But neither is as bad as southern AZ.
