I would be real carefull with that idea ... horses are really prone to getting colic with even slight changes in their diets. If you went forward with the idea, ween them slowly into the spent grains and then ween them slowly off of them. Colic sucks! I wouldn't even take the chance with horses.
Completely agree. It's just not worth it. The relatively high concentration of simple sugars will really do a number on their digestive system. This can also cause founder, which will lame your horse for life.
This is some great info. I give my grains away to friends with livestock whenever I can & this is something good to note. So far my grains have only gone to cows and also to a cheese making friend with goats & sheep. And dogs in the form of biscuits of course. My breakfast spot is looking at raising their own pigs & possibly a cow or 3, so they'll probably start going there when they get started up.
