Interesting that you say RR did their first ever mash hop with the Imperial Janets Brown. I've been listening to some of the older Sunday Sessions and Vinnie was saying on one of those that they mash hop Pliny the Elder. What's going on there?

Then I would have been mistaken. I remember his brewer saying it was the first time he'd seen it but this was at the pub brewery, Pliny (the new Pliny I should say) is now made at the main brewery. I'll find out if they still mash hop and if he does, how he calculates the IBUs.

Yes, I think my calculated IBUs from mash hopping are pretty close. My JBA, Pliny Clone, Celebration Clone, and Tasty APA taste about has hoppy as they calculate. In the case of the Tasty APA, maybe a little hoppier than calculated.

Just out of interest ... I've started playing around with promash and noticed you can select a hop addition as been mash hop, takes all the effort out of it for you. :P

Tried mash hopping for the first time today. 10g Amarillow in 2.5Kg of grain. The aroma was great but by the time the word made it to kettle, all hop aroma and flavour was lost ... no bitterness either. Did I just use too little?

Not exactly sure. I used 110 grams of mash hop in about 50 liters then 180 grams for the dry hop. 10 grams does not seen like a lot to me but depends on batch size.

My mash volume was 7 litres and total brew length was around 11.5 litres.

180/50 = 3.6
3.6x11.5 = 41.4

So I only used about a quarter as much as you did. Could be why then.
