Rice Hulls are awesome

Sat Nov 10, 2012 12:22 pm

I know this is not news to many brewers, but I was surprised by results. I started adding rice hulls to my mash on my last brew. My efficiency went from about 68% to 84%. I overshot my OG as a result. I added a pound of rice hulls for my 5 gallon batch. I undershot my mashtemp again, but at least the temp seemed to be more stable throughout the mash. It was the best two dollars I have spent. I am brewing again tomorrow, so I can verify that it wasn't an anomaly.

If I don't have rice hulls, I don't brew. You don't need a whole pound each time. A couple handfuls is normally enough. I use them every brew (I crush my grains pretty fine) whether I need them or not.

They are also a good substitute for Total brand cereal... just add milk.

The reason you missed your mash temp? You added a pound of rice hills lol, that's a lot of rice hulls in 5 gallons

Man, I wish it was that simple. I have been fighting with my mashtun since my first all-grain batch. No matter how hot I get my strike water, I always seems to end up at 149.

Are you preheating your mash tun?

I am pre-heating for about 15-mins, but still no joy.

What are you using to calculate your strike water? And have you calibrated your thermometer?
