How long will milled grain last?

Mon Nov 02, 2015 4:00 pm

Anyone have any idea how long I can leave already milled grain sitting around before using it? I was going to brew today but had some technical difficulties. The grain bill is already milled however.

I think you are good for a month or so if you keep it in a reasonably cool and dry place. If you chew some of it and it is soft then it is stale. Think corn flakes that have been left out on a rainy hot day and that is the level of stale I think you are worried about.

I think a month is pushing it. Technically usable, but noticeably degraded from fresh. I guess it depends on your situation. Personally, grain is fairly cheap. Any more than a week-ish & I'd dump mine. Brewing AG is a lot of work & time for a half-assed product IMO.

Agreed. If you have the ability to vacuum seal it, then this could extend the life of the grains. I was going to suggest that 2 wks might be pushing it.
