How do you convert % in a recipe?

Mon Dec 30, 2013 10:27 am

So I've been going back through some older episodes and some thing I've always wondered
When given a recipe in percentages how do you convert that over so that I know how much I need?

Specific grain divided by total grain bill is your percentage of that particular grain.

For example, if recipe asks for 10% C-60 on a 10 Pound grain bill, that is 1 pound of C-60.

or

0.10 * 10 pounds = 1 pound of that grain. (0.10 is decimal form of 10%)

Does that help?

If you have Beersmith, you can create a 100 gallon recipe, enter your percentages as pounds (i.e. 80% 2 Row would be 80 lbs.) and then scale down to your recipe size.

Well the problem I'm having is this recipe was from a local brewery. So I am not sure of the grain bill size, I forgot to ask.

Tasty just mentioned how he scales in one of the last two shows. I believe he uses a similar method but uses 1 gallon and add .8 for 80% etc..

It was great advice since that part always drove me crazy...

Yes, that works too but I get a kick out of thinking I'm going to brew a 100 gallon recipe ( even if it is short lived  )
