Re: fresh picked hops?

I vacuum sealed and froze my entire harvest last year and brewed with them all year. One trick that I came up with to reduce the amount of wort/beer that the fresh hops absorbed, was to put the hops in a food processor and coarsely chop them to break up their cone structure. When the boil is done, they compact nicely in the kettle. It also works when "Dry hopping" with fresh hops.

NOTING~!!??? !@#$%#$$#$???

WOW~!!
Maybe they don't like hops?

You are in OR which is temperate like my itty bitty corner of hell in NJ
I'm encouraged to try hops now.

Did you plant rhizomes? How many per species?
What sort of harvest does one expect from a rhizome?

I got about 3 ounces off of two plants. You get a lot more the older the plant. I planted 3 vines. 1 willamette, 1 chinook, 1 cascade. The willamette risome rotted out and died. the other two did pretty well. The cascade is doing very well!!

I am brewing a fresh hop pale ale right now. I dried the hops and am using them less than 1 week after harvest. For a 10 gal batch I used 2 oz chinook at 90 min and 2 oz cascade, 1.5 oz zeus, and 1.5 oz chinook all at flameout with a 15 min whirlpool then immersion chill. Gonna dry hop with 1.5 oz each of zeus and cascade. :bnarmy:

On Tap: Bodacious Brown Ale
On Tap: Maple Double IPA
