Standard yeast starter ...then stir plate

Fri Apr 11, 2014 5:48 pm

hello.....I made a starter last night (about 18 hrs ago) and went to put it on the stir plate, but the stir bar I had was too long and kept getting thrown. I purchased a smaller one today and its spinning ok. My question is: am I still going to get the same amount of growth out of the yeast 18 hrs from pitching (with just some shaking in between) or do I need to calculate it as a standard starter using JZ's prc (which may leave me short on the yeast count)?
Any help is appreciated, Thanks

Don't worry about it! The fact that you made a starter is an improvement over no starter. Next time it will be better! If you condition your stir bars by storing them on the stir plate that will help, too.

What is the volume/gravity of the batch, what was the volume/gravity of the starter & how much yeast did you pitch into the starter?

6 gal @ 1.065...the prc showed 2 packs of 1056 (1 month old) into 1 liter of starter.....but of course the calculator also shows needing a larger starter if not plated.

Your fine, one pack of 1056, one month old, will ferment your wort with gusto, even with your stir plate glitch. I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't have a blow out.

1 pack would work, but you're underpitching a bit. 2 packs without a starter would be completely fine. Even a starter without a stirplate will give you some growth as well. I wouldn't worry about it.
