Just secured a SWEET source of local honey!!

Wed Jun 01, 2011 5:57 pm

Went to the local fresh market the other day and ot 3 lbs for $12.99. Way too much. Called the uy direct and asked him about ettin #20. He asked what I needed it for and I explained I wanted to make mead. He was ABSOLUTELY pumped!
He said he would ive me a screamin deal on it. I then told him that Imade a Barleywine, already with it a couple of weeks ao that had a #1.5 in it, and I told him he could have some when it was ready. He was really taken by the fact that I used and want to use more of his honey. He said he tried to make mead one time, but it didnt turn out so well. He even said "racked" when he referred to transfer!
Anyways, he said he would straiht up ive me #40 lbs. of basswood and wildflower, if Imake him a batch, too!
Sounds ood to me!
He didnt even ive me a price quote, thats what I thouht was really cool.
I just fuckin love what a little bit of fermentation can brin about in people! He wants to have a beer and have me walk him throuh it, too, sop he can try it aain.
Looks like I need to et more carboys that can sit for months/years.

While you probably already have a mead recipe that works for you, you should give a look. http://www.homebrewersassociation.org/a ... _Panel.pdf

This is from a presentation given at NHC last year. This technique makes great mead that is ready in just a couple of months. Mine came out great!

So bit of a funny story, I know a guy that makes mead, had a local guy hook him up for honey part of the deal was some of the batches.

Well the mead was made, and the supplier HATED it, the meadmaker was heart broken-1) he was told his mead sucked 2)his cheap local hook up was lost.

Now comes time for a competition a year and a half later. The Meadmaker gets 1st in Spiced, 1st in Fruit(don't ask me mead styles I was just stewarding) then wins Best of Show. It looked like he was damn near in tears. Well, it so happens that this guy works at a brewpub, and thats where the comp was, that night in walks the honey supplier. He sits down at his table and has 3 ribbons laid out in front of him, and he was Shocked those were the meads he hated.
