BBQ Beef Sandwich - what to add beside beef and bread?

Mon Jun 28, 2010 2:37 pm

We made ribs on Saturday in the smoker and I have an empty spot closer to the firebox and I decided to see if the free space in the smoker could be put to use.

I found a reasonably priced Beef Round Eye Round Roast and threw it on. Then cut it up after it rested and simmered it in some BBQ sauce and it is awesome.

My question - we don't have many BBQ places around here. What do you put on the sandwich? I have a bakery around the corner that makes great Hamburger buns, should I add cole slaw, lettuce, cheese? Not sure what folks add to the BBQ beef and the bread to complete a sandwich like this.

Here it the Great State of Texas, we'd add sliced pickles and onions (either sliced or chopped). No one adds lettuce or cheese. (I've tried adding the cheese at home and have always been disappointed.) The slaw is served on the side here. Having said that, the cole slaw on the sandwich is a good thing. (Don't let the other Texans know. I'd be disowned.) I would add a couple of jalapeno slices, but that's just me.

Lettuce on a BBQ sammich? Good God, man, you've been in the Pacific too long! :jnj

I'd go with peppers and onions.

I'd go with all 3 of the choices above and eat them regularly if I were you

Thanks all! Are the onions raw or sweated? Sweet bell peppers? I like the idea of jalapenos - my wife and I do like it spicy and it encourages the drinking of more beer & wine. Some serranos and habeneros are also in the garden as well as Hawaiian chile peppers. Maybe some chipotle - smoked pepper with the smoked meat.

Lettuce did not make sense, but I thought I saw them dump cole slaw on top of the sandwich on those Carolina shows, but that is BBQ pork and this is BBQ beef.

Smoking ribs, beef and brewing a batch of beer are a great way to spend the day.

We have a tasty cornbread recipe dialed in. Any other favorite sides? Plenty of time to practice here as it is almost always summertime here.

There a pizza place around here that's a local institution that does an amazing BBQ sandwich. They take sourdough bread and slice it Texas toast style. The BBQ beef if then put on the bread with a slice of good ole' American cheese, and grilled up like a Reuben. It looks a little something like this...
