Hey BN forum

I'm a relatively new brewer with a molecular biology background (which reads: I'm better than you) and I'm hoping this forum has what I'm looking for, advanced brewing discussion and a conglomeration of degenerates.

I love you

I'm thinking of getting a bachelors in Organic Chem and some sort of micro-biology minor or whatever I can get. What do you think would be helpful I'm brewing? I'm really into the science and fascinated with micro-biology. I love brewing but I'd also love to do lab work and study beer science

My first piece of advice is don't. It's horrible and you'll want to put a gun in your mouth. If I haven't scared you off then it will all make you much better at brewing. I started with all grain right off the bat about a year ago and the hardest thing to do so far is convince my vagina-er half to spend a ton of money and space on brewing equipment in our 800 sf apartment.

Hahaha yea the wife is always hard. I started pretty much all grain too. I did 2 extract batches (just the all in one can thing) the first was terrible and the second I mixed in a bunch o stuff and it turned out okay. I just decided if I really wanted to be creative I needed to jump all in and I've been loving it ever since (about 4 years)

I love fermenting all kinds of things right now I have a session IPA, mead, Kombucha, peppers for hot sauce and some mead vinegar also for the hot sauce. I'm fascinated by fermentation and all the microorganisms. What do you do for a living with your degrees? Is there a pretty wide selection of careers for these fields? My dream is to open a fermentory where I can ferment all kinds of things but I need something to fall back on haha

Just keep reminding her that you guys are already saving so much money by doing all grain in the first place! Welcome!

I imagine in HI, it's a bit more expensive than the rest of us. Tell her you'll spend less money on brewing if she agrees to move to Montana in the winter!

I built everything on the cheap but there's always one more thing, an accurate thermometer, a mill, a fermentation chamber, etc. My strategy has been to convince her with better beer from each new purchase and by threatening to build ugly monstrosities to avoid buying things.

Brewing here is the only thing that's not insanely more expensive, there are mainland HBSs that charge about the same. We pay the same for our place as her parents do for a 3 br house in Florida though.

Hey! What's that supposed to mean? It was a balmy 18 above last night in the valley. Thought I was going to have a palm tree sprout in the back yard!
