G'day from Australia!

Tue Aug 13, 2013 7:09 pm

G'day everyone!
I'm Josh, 21 and in Australia.
Not too long ago I discovered what everyone on here has..... the joys of brewing.
That was about 10 months and 10 batches ago. Since then with every brew I seem to expand my set up and try more and more complex recipes...its awesome!
Being in Australia, lagers aren't really a possibility without temperature control, but I am more than happy with the styles I can brew. I have looked at ways to control the temperature and cant wait to start building the next instalment in my set up.
I love my new hobbie (too much my girl friend says, but luckily she is a beer drinker and helps) and in this time have purchased loads of books, read lots of online info and have recently started making a few of my own recipes.
I'm new to forums and would love to make a few friends who can help me out.
Cant wait to chat to everyone!

Im in Victoria. I love it, but the weather isnt exactly ideal for brewing. One day its too hot, next its too cold, cant win :P How have you guys coped with this?
Also, got any good homebrew supply shops? Am I allowed to ask that on here? My local shops alright, but doesnt have quite a few specialty grains and hops so I may have to get some shipped in.

Hi from Canberra! I have an old fridge (given to me by a mate) with a light globe and a heating/cooling temp controller. Cost me all of $30-40 and an hour or 2 to set up. Keep an eye on local classifieds for a cheap fridge. Apart from experience a temp controlled ferm chamber is really one of the best things you can do to improve your beer.

Grain and Grape is in Victoria and a current/former? BN sponsor.

Josh from Western Sydney here.

You near Melbourne? I'll be looking for a beer in Cup Week. Going down on a boys week with guys from work. Prob hit up Beer deluxe and the Taphouse.

I go through Brew Adelaide for my supplies, and Craftbrewer, based in Qld, offers great service and ships nationally.

SA has much more stable weather than Vic so it's a bit easier. I have a ferment fridge and that's really it, though occasionally I need to use a heat pad to bring the beer up to the right temp during the colder periods. Or I make lagers. It's been raining just about every day for a couple of months, which is kinda weird over here.

I've been looking at the son of a fermentation chiller, but finding the insulation foam is too hard/expensive. I didnt even think of using a fridge (idiot!), theres even a spare one sitting in the garage, I know what Ill be doing when I get some spare time! Thanks a heap! What sort of light did you use? I was looking at using a heat light for a reptile enclosure, but will that give off too much heat/ is it overkill and a standard light will do?

Grain and grape is where I got my first fermenter, however its a pain to get to from my place.

I've had a look at craftbrewer, they look pretty good. I reckon I'll try ordering some stuff from there at some point. Im currently only partial mashing so I dont need a lot of grains, helps with delivery charges!

I'm yet to make a lager, I know the moment I do there will be a run of freakishly warm days!
