New To Mashing

Next week i bottle my first brew kit! My next batch i want to make my mash. oh yeah i want to make a high gravity beer. Watched videos and read some advice online but want advice from you guys! Love the brew strong radio and heard good things about this forum, so my first question. How to make a mash? Have ideals but not sure. Thanks!

Put some hot water and some malt together and there you go, mash!

You want about 1.5 quarts of hot water per pound of grain or 3 liters per kg. You want to heat the water up to about 168 degrees so when you mix it with the grain it will be about 150 degrees. Then you need something to filter the grain from the liquid. That's really all there is to it.

Have you read How to Brew? IF you don't have a copy, it is available on line, and provides a good overview of the mashing process. I'm kind of worried that if you jump in trying to make a super high grave brew, you might have trouble getting hte process down. I'd recommend starting slower on a smaller beer first.

While I believe you should make the beer you want to make, I have to agree with Spiderwrangler. A really high gravity beer comes with its own pitfalls. Getting your process down makes those little snags easier to cope with.

Or, do a partial mash so you can mash for a smaller gravity, then use extract to bump yourself up to a higher OG if a big beer is what you want to have.
