Hello from Minnesota

Tue Apr 05, 2011 2:43 pm

I've six-year semi-ok brewer here in the western suburbs of Minnesota. I alternate between streaks of all-grain and steep/extract brewing.

I brewed a beat beer once, that was my most radical brew. Mashed the beats right with the grain, added some more beers for to the secondary. Pretty as could be: magenta with a pink head. Taste is ... OK. The earthliness of the beats hasn't come through as much as I'd hoped.

Thanks
Mike

Uff-da, dare den.
Welcome to the forum. Lots of good info and shenanigans here. Western suburbs of MN, huh? Not quite sure how that works. I'm in Alexandria.
A beet beer sounds pretty crazy. I think that I am going to do a lutefisk beer for the holidays. Or not.

Bah. Proof-reading is for wimps.

Ooh yeah, y'know, Sorry, der western suburbs of Minneapolis. In spite my comment, I aware of the rest of the state, unlike perhaps our legislators. Born in Bemidji.

The beet beer is pretty interesting, but it is telling that I made it last summer and I still have a third of left. I can't quite pin down what I don't like about it, except that it is too vegital and not enough Beets. Still, it looks like Kool-Aid, but still tastes like beer. The Maris Otter is present. But it is too odd to be a session beer.

Lutefisk? As finings, I hope...

Hello from the big city!

Did you use regular beets or sugar beets? I had rum made from sugar beets once, but I never would have thought of making beer from the stuff.

Regular beets from the farmer's market. I sliced them about 1/4" thick and boiled them to gelentize them, like you would if they were a hard adjunct like rice. I mixed the resulting purple liquid and beets into the strike water and away I went. I collected a 6.7 1.057 pre-boil wort off 8lbs Maris Otter and 3.75lbs beets, so I believe the beets added to my gravity. They must have, since I could not possibly have collected that much gravity from just 8lbs base malt.

Like I said, the result is fanatically pretty, but the taste is not an intensely beet like as I'd hoped.
