Brew Rookie From Philly - Yo!

Fri Jun 30, 2006 8:34 pm

Hi all,

I've yet to brew my first batch of beer but I have several meads going right now. I can't wait to get started, I'm thinking about starting with a Pale Ale extract recipe. My wife's family has Irish, German and Native American blood so I'm thinking that my new hobby will be very popular with that side of the family!

I'm married w. 2 kids and expecting a third sometime between now and July 20th, not a great time to pick up a new hobby but what the hell, it's beer we're talking about here. I live just outside of Philadelphia and if you can only judge distances by where the good beer comes from then I'm about a 30 minute drive from Triumph (New Hope, PA), a 40 minute drive from Victory (yeah Hop Devil) and about 2 1/2 hours from Dogfish Head.

One problem that I have is that my cooktop is one of those original flat ceramic/glass types from years ago and I don't think they got it quite right. I can't even boil 2 1/2 gallons of water in a stock pot. I guess I'll have to pony up for a burner.

Thanks to the TBN for inspiring me. I found myself literally salivating while listening to the last Jamil show.

Welcome, Portly!

First, congratulations on the new kid, you viril sack of beer-brewing manhood! Hope all goes well.

Leave the cooktop to the little woman and get a turkey fryer. You'll love me for it (and I mean, LOVE ME). eBay, Home Depot, whatever... get one.

Thanks for logging on... see you in the chatroom.

Speyedr/Rob,

Thanks! It's a small world.I'm in Kulpsville, right down the street from Towamencin beverage. I couldn't be much closer.

Are you a member of Keystone Hops? If so, what do you think of the club?

Small indeed!

Not a member. You see, I'm a loner, a rebel.. there's things about me you wouldn't understand... things you couldn't understand... things you shouldn't understand...

Such as why I am quoting PeeWee Herman...

Actually, the guys at the shop are great, I just NEVER manage to get there on that 3rd Thursday for the meetings. Between that and Poker night I choose Poker... and mt Wife MAKES me choose....

I have entered a few of the competitions, and been to one at Iron Hill Montgomeryville. Everyone is really nice and really helpful.

Good luck and let me know if I can be of service. Got one of my Neighbors brewing so far... The rest just drink my beer.

Portly,
I'm a relatively new member of Keystone Hops, but I can tell you that we have black (or maybe blue?) balled Rob from the club. We, as homebrewers, can tolerate enough but when he showed up to a meeting in his crotchless ballerina costume with a six pack of Miller Lite, that was way out of line. Miller Lite at a homebrew meeting? What the hell has the world come to?
