Newbie from Indianapolis

Tue Jul 20, 2010 6:46 am

Hi guys! My name is Leela and I'm a newbie to the forums. Even though I'm a n00b to beer brewing and a female at that, I hope that I can be accepted into the inner circle of beer fanatics. :D

I've been wanting to brew a fine beer (or at least, ATTEMPT to brew a fine beer and mess up) for quite some time now, but never really knew HOW to start. I've looked at all of those packaged "Home brew beer" kits, but something seemed super artificial about it to me. I'm hoping that by joining this here forum, I can learn more about brewing and meet some neato people.

Anyway, glad to be here!

Welcome to the inner circle! Of course the inner circle includes everyone except for the couple idiots that have been banned from the forum...
Ask your questions and you shall receive answers.

Welcome. I am also a newbie once again after about a 10 year hiatus but everyone here seems great. I have brewed just a few batches with extract and steeped grains. It is somewhere to start and drinking your own beer while you are learning is pretty satisfying. I have learned more in the last few months than I had ever known. I am getting ready to jump over to all grain and I am getting some great local support thanks to the BN. Good luck in your pursuit of the perfect beer.

Welcome Leela! No need to feel intimidated by the experienced brewers here. Everyone here is quite willing to be helpful. Ask any question you want about brewing and you will get lots of helpful information.

Ask advice on just about anything else and you are on your own. 8) You never know what kind of idiocy will surface. Things get a little crude around here at times, but no one means anyone ill. We are all here to enjoy ourselves and make good beer. Anything we can do to help you or anyone make better beer will help the hobby (or obsession) as a whole and we all benefit.

Welcome again!

Welcome, Leela. Ask anything, as Bugeater said. And if Bug posts any advice, write it down. He's a great brewer. If I post advice you're probably better off ignoring it.

And watch out for Bub. (It's been a while since anyone said it. . .)

Welcome Leela! As "home brew beer" kits go, it totally depends on your definition. If you're talking about a Mr. Beer kit, you're right to be suspect, but if you get a kit from a homebrew shop (usually a couple of buckets, hydrometer, thermometer, siphon and some tubing) you'll make good beer. Check out Morebeer!, Northern Brewer or one of the other fine homebrew shops that sponsor the Brewing Network (banner links are on the home page). Support your local homebrew shop when you can, but look over the other sites to see what's available and what competitive prices are.

If you're referring to pre-packaged ingredient kits, go for it. They are typically proven recipes put together by the stores with step-by-step instructions on how to brew it.

Code, I didn't realize you had a non-geek side. Unless you're referring to your vindictive "don't piss me off or I'll electronically erase you from the world" side, in which case I rescind my previous statement.

Here's some rare insight: "codewritinfool" can be taken two ways, as intended. I've considered just walking away from tech many times to simplify my life. I'm perfectly in my element both cleaning cow shit off of my boots as well as writing compilers for custom processors implemented on ASICs. My wife doesn't work and the simpler stuff doesn't pay the bills, so here I am.

As far as the "erase you from the world" side, I do not reveal sources & methods, though I will say I'm strictly white hat. Everyone here is my brother.

Sorry for the off-topic rant, and BTW, "Leela" is one of Dr. Who's traveling companions.

Welcome, Leela! (bring Romana sometime, but keep Adric away)
