Brewing in South Africa

Sun Aug 15, 2010 9:50 am

Hi All

I've been brewing for about 1 year now, just bottled my 9th brew which is also my 3rd all grain. it is a Porter based on the Robust Porter recipe in Brewing Classic Styles, I can't wait to taste it the sample from the hydrometer tasted awesome.

Every time I brew I get more addicted to the hobby it really is awesome, been listening to the podcasts on BN for a year and they have really helped me.

Thanks
Grant

I read that you guys in Saffa Land have some unique hops varieties, are they worth trying?

Welcome! My wife and I got married in Cape Town and spent half our honeymoon there and the other half in Franschoek. What a beautiful country! We had an absolute blast and really hope to make it back again someday!

Thanks

Since I consider myself to be very new to the hobby I can't really tell you to much about the hops, generally I have been advised to use our local hops for bittering and imported for flavour and aroma, so in keeping with this advice I have only used Southern Promise which has about 11-12% AA for bittering. I understand that there are some new hybrids which the guys are trying for flavour but I haven't tried them yet. I will keep you posted once I try them though.

I am glad you enjoyed your stay in our country, Cape Town is an amazing city and generally better known for it's wine rather than beer, Franshoek even more so but one of the wineries there has started a small brewpub with equipment from Flecks in Austria, I have only tasted 1 of their beers and it wasn't bad at all. We are planning a trip there in October and I will definitely be making a plan to sample more of their beers while drinking in the scenery.

Yeah there's certainly more of a wine emphasis in Cape Town, but that's okay cause my wife and I both enjoy wine as well and we visited a few wineries. We did eat a couple times at Mitchell's on the waterfront and I enjoyed the beers I had there quite a bit.

Cool to hear that you are enjoying homebrewing. It really is one of the most addictive things I have picked up in my life here on planet earth (besides sex of course). Welcome aboard from the states!
