Brew-noob in SEAsia

Hi. I live about half of the time - sometimes more - in Thailand. What brought me here, were comments I found online from a poster about dealing with the Thai heat while trying to do mead. My interest here is mead, cider and (possibly Calvados). Cider and calvados are 2 of the things that I really would like to be able to get hold of here at a reasonable price. After a few years, it has become clear that 'reasonable price' really means brew-yer-own; so before starting, I'm trying to skirt around the more obvious pitfalls and mistakes by asking others to tell me what they are! :o
