It's just generally inaccurate, regardless of viability. I use it for a rough estimation. It'll get you close enough to say pitch or no pitch, which is what I'm going after. It'll definitely identify a healthy colony from an unhealthy one fairly easily. 90% vs 92%... who cares if you're just brewing with it. I would like to have the lab equipment to do it, but not because it'll make a difference in my brewing, just because I'm a nerd like that. I'm already thinking of some torture methods.... er... experiments for my yeastie pets.
