I harvested about another 2oz of Fuggels today. Looks like I should get at least one more harvest off that plant.

Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza.

Time for a hop show!

Tue Aug 15, 2006 11:53 am

Three seasons with my mystery rhizome in the ground, and finally a decent vine. The damn thing is so heavy that it snapped my bamboo trellis in half, and now the hops are "providing shade" for my tomatoes, cucumbers, jalapenos, etc. At least my harvest will be easy, as the entire vine is lying horizontally across the garden.

Way back when the Hop Union guy was on the show, there was talk of a hop episode during harvest time. Well, it's time for that show. This will be my first harvest, and I'd love to hear a discussion of things that we should know about picking, storing, using the hops and whatnot.

And where can I get one of those Zorak looking hop guardians? I'm sick of picking creepy little beetles off my vine. Heh heh, that sounds funny.

Praying Mantids are in abundance here in TN. There was a smaller different species where I grew up in MI. I don't know how far ranging they are, but there are about 2000 species all over the world.

This one has lived on this cascade bine ever since he was a lil' bitty dude. Don't enter a staring contest with one...you'll lose.

Oh, and just to stay on topic, I got about 2 oz dried off my 6 hop plants in their first year.

Pics of my hops will be posted soon. They're out at my brothers land. I also have a hops in a container experiment going. The potted hops are my tallest so far, being about 10 feet tall for the first year.

Lufa, those are mutant hops from Uranus. I had some of mine come out as triplets. Three in one bundle. This I figure is one of the other reasons that people say to discard the first year flowers. I realized after placing my harvest next to some store bought one real big diff. My flowers didn't have the really strong Cascade smell. I know that part of this is due to how young some of the flowers are and also to how young the plants are. I just threw them out and I'll see what comes up next year. In the mean time just be glad that you are one of the lucky ones to have the plant in your yard.
