I must confess that I am unfortunately very much the opposite of filmlabrat. Other than my $2/month, and my clicks to Amazon, I don't do anything for the BN. I barely ever even post in the forum unless I have some stupid question that I can't find the answer to anywhere.

I very much disagree that the BN is in any way ignoring its listeners. Other than at the last few minutes of the Session, I have noticed that the BN has ALWAYS been willing to take listener calls, and I think this is perhaps the main reason that the BN is as successful as it is. Listeners truly feel like they are part of the "network", and their questions and input are always welcome. No matter who the guest or what the topic, listeners are encouraged to interact. In fact, I’m sure anyone would agree that listener input (via calls, emails or chat) is how a lot of great questions as well as entertainment come from. I challenge anyone to find any type of radio show that is this open to its listeners.

It takes a lot of work to make the BN roll, and the people doing the work need their down time as much as anyone. We wouldn’t want them to get burnt out and quit. So, if the Session is not on this week, take a deep breath and go listen to something else. Or one of the old archives. Or take all the knowledge you got from the BN and brew a great beer. Or call an old friend…

Wow! Look what Film Lab Rat stirred up!

I've been thinking about this all day, and I have an opinion.

While Moscow is right that the off weeks have been around for a while, the doubling up of off weeks has become more and more common. I say this in jest, but last week bloberglawp came to town, and we didn't get a show. This week is the scheduled off week and we don't get a show. And this isn't an uncommon thing, the two off weeks together, I mean. So I understand where Film Lab Rat is coming from.

Moscow, the last sentence of your response should not have been posted. I've been in customer service for almost 40 years. While I'd like to tell a couple of customers to fuck off, I would never, ever tell them to do it. You shouldn't have spoken personally in public like that. You're the producer. You speak for the BN and its sponsors, not for yourself.

I know you said it in jest but I'm going to have to throw a flag down on that play. I know it can seem and feel like the BN halted for Blobber and the disney trip but I'll pose 2 thoughts. First, and very logically they hadn't taken a Feb off week yet and it was the last weekend in Feb. Secondly, and most importantly they made no attempts to hide this fact and BNers were welcome to join in on the fun! I know that this is very west coast centric but that is the nature of the beast with an international show. They gave 4ish months warning and invited listeners to come to the weekend (no not officially on the air but it wasn't difficult to get an invite as long as you are more than just an archive listener and are on the forum or FB). This is a level of inclusion of listeners that is very high in my opinion. No not everyone can make it out to LA to get to disney and no disney isn't everyone's cup of tea (I was extremely jealous I couldn't make it I'm a big disney buff) but I thought it was awesome that they still invited people to go to the park or the the bruery.

That being said I do understand the frustration that some people are having. There are changes happening at the BN. Its not a show based in some guy's garage or spare bedroom anymore. I think Justin's stance on these things is now and has always been "look were going to run the business and try and grow it the way we think is best. You can either come along for the ride or get off, but if you get off your not going to offend me." I for one still enjoy the shows and enjoy getting to know people here on the forum and in the chatroom. But that's just my 2 cents. (or in canada my 10 cents since they have no pennies :) )

I'm going to have to challenge the call on the field. I know the last weekend off was planned well in advance, and I've been jealous of the trip. That's why I prefaced it with "Look! this part here is a joke!"

I don't have a problem with off weekends. I was just pointing out, with humor, that maybe some thought could have been given to having two off weekends in a row outside of the Holidays.

You hit the nail on the head here, and it's something I meant to say, but didn't. The show has changed a lot when it was just J, Daniela, Jon Plise and Doc sitting around the table in the garage. And it's changed in good ways. For example, the BN went from being the foul mouthed kids on the West Coast to the semi-official network for GABF and NHC. As the brand becomes more successful, some of the long time listeners will feel like the BN has moved past them to another target audience.

Unfortunately for you guys, that doesn't include me. I'm sticking around. :asshat:

How come when people talk about the beginning, I am never mentioned? You know, I was on like the 5th show ever, right? And then kind of never left, and I MADE this NETWORK!

I love FLR - he spoke his mind, and he has every right to do so. That was brave of him, especially in this crowd. I will say, though, that putting on The Session is way more work than simply showing up on Sunday (or Monday) and talking for 4 hours. That slacker mentality thing was perhaps the worst face we could have put forward, because it simply isn't true. We are working on so much crap behind the scenes - and have been for years - that it would blow your mind if you knew. So for us to have one week with no show is a perk that we give ourselves because we feel we deserve it.

Personally, I hate having two weeks off in a row. I love being on the radio, and I miss it dearly when we are not on. The idea of a Monday show has been around for awhile, and while I don't like them, it gives us all a rare chance to have a full weekend with the people in our lives - namely, our girlfriends. Sundays kind of suck, because you don't have a full weekend to do anything - if you go out of town you have to be back and at the studio by 4pm, which limits what you can do and where you can do it. When I go to Disneyland, we have to leave by 11am in order to do the show that night. Having a limited vacation time sucks, and after 6 years it puts a strain and a resentment on our significant others. So, I'm sorry to those of you who can't listen live on Mondays. If only we had a way of recording those shows and letting you listen at your leisure .... I'll look into it!

Nobody here is doing this for the money. None of us are rich, ("Us" being myself, Justin, and Scott) and we are all just now making enough to pay bills with. Not saying this so you'll donate, but I'm simply saying that we do this out of love for the gig and love for the listeners and if by taking two days off in a row bothers you (In a row meaning separated by 6 days ... ), FLR, then I'm sorry that your happiness means more to you than these folks who have brought you years of enjoyment. I still love you.

The BN Army keeps growing, so we are doing something right. You can't please everyone - something we have learned years ago - and we keep doing our thing. If you don't like it, that's fine, I don't care. But please don't say that it's because we have stopped putting listeners first, it's insulting. I'll show you my bank account as proof that this is not the case.

One Love and I'm out!

JP

P.S. - Blobber wasn't "In Town" - he was about 350 miles to the south of us, so we didn't take time off to hang with him. Some of us did, but only because we didn't have a show last Sunday. God, I LOVE having a day off. That means I can hang out late with my friends.

Sometimes I feel like JP. Jeez! The Blober in town thing was a joke! I know LA is nowhere near SF. I went for a laugh and missed. I know it was planned long in advance. Mea culpa.
