Wrong information about PA case law on the Stone show

Mon Nov 06, 2006 1:03 pm

You guys were mentioning not being able to purchase one 22 oz etc... but this is not the case. There are to go "six pack" stores where you can buy singles, mixed six packs and whole six packs. Additionally you can purchase 6 packs at bars to go. We can also get growlers from our local brewwpubs. Just thought i'd chime in on that.

Quote from Lew Bryson, a local Beer writer:
"There are two ways to buy takeout beer in PA, not counting brewpub/brewery purchases. You can buy it at a "distributor," where the case law is in effect: you must buy a case, no less. Or you can buy it at a bar, where you can only buy up to two six-packs to take out. There are a couple different kind of bar licenses in PA -- tavern, restaurant, hotel, resort/airport, and even 'museum' licenses -- but there is no "beer store" or "deli" license, despite what folks here may tell you. Bars may have what looks like a retail store attached, but it's a bar license."

So basically what you do for the six pack limit if you want more than 2 at a time you have to buy the two, walk out of the store then walk back in and buy two more.

Thanks for the clarification. I heard about the ability to purchase six-packs from bars. I was curious as to whether they charge you a separate price for a six-pack or do you pay the same price for a bottle of beer as if you were to purchase it at the bar? kapeesh?

To go beer is always cheaper to buy than if you were to drink it at the bar, or at least that has been my experience. However some of the local beer bars don't put that big of a markup on the beer when you drink it there. The cheapest way to buy is by the case at the distributor.

I hate the Bible Belt and the damn blue laws.

Here in Texas you can never buy "beer to go". Only beer you can buy from a brewpub is the stuff you drink there. And I asked the local microbrewery about filling up my corny... nope, illegal. Freakin' Baptists...
