The first 3 I was going to try are Ubuntu, Fedora & Mint. Think I'm adding Gentoo to that list. Haven't looked into that one at all, but I definitely will now. Just finding the time to really mess with all 4 of those is going to take a while but if I'm still not satisfied, I'm definitely coming back here to try some of the others that have been mentioned. I really appreciate all the info guys. I love being able to use the LiveCD so I can really play with my options before I commit.

I've been using Ubuntu on my laptop for almost seven years. I don't do much mucking about under the hood, and the command line confuses the crap out of me. I upgraded to 12.04 last year, and it was the first upgrade that didn't break everything! I hate Unity a little less in this version.

Figures that discussions of Jayne hats and Linux are the only things to get Linuxelf to post in the forum in over a year... :unicornrainbow:

Take a look at Kubuntu much nicer GUI than Ubuntu. Some better base apps.

Linux From Scratch is the only way to go. It's like malting grain you've grown, and using hops you've grown, and taking a medal at NHC with the beer you brewed from them.

Linux Distro's are taking the butcher's word for it instead of looking up the bull's ass. :)

Cheers!

I have used a lot of different distributions of Linux, by far the easiest for new users is Linux Mint, I have installed it for some technically challenged people and they have had no problems.

I have used different versions of Linux over the years. I am NOT a CMD line guy like the hard core Linux guys. I use the GUI, and I am currently running Linux as my home desktop. I gave up computer gaming a few years ago, cause it is too expensive to keep up with the Jones in technology. I will be building a new PC in the next year or so, and I will turn it into a Windows machine. For now it serves my every day home PC use service. I can do all the normal shit, like email (Thunderbird), browse the net (Firefox), and do anything that MS Office can do with Libre Office. Sure it has its qwerks, but for me it works out for now.

Here are my system Properties and OS info.

OS Information
OS: Linux 3.4.47-2.38-desktop x86_64
Current user: executioner@linux-rfxi
System: openSUSE 12.2 (x86_64)
KDE: 4.8.5 (4.8.5) "release 2"

CPU Information
Processor (CPU): AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+
Speed: 1,838.80 MHz

Memory Information
Total memory (RAM): 3.9 GiB
Free memory: 2.6 GiB (+ 607.8 MiB Caches)
Free swap: 2.0 GiB

YES, its an old machine, but again Linux works nicely!

Since this thread was resurrected, did you ever settle on one?
