Overall Impression

Thu Feb 21, 2013 5:32 pm

Entered my brew of the CYBI Shakespeare Stout (but had to use US-05, instead of Pac-Man) into my club's stout comp. The judges didn't really care for it. Scores averaged 26, with comments about the roast and hops clashing, unbalanced, etc.
One judge's comments in the Overall Impression section of the scoresheet made it all worthwhile, though. For a laugh, anyway...

"This beer throws my senses off. It's like a really hot she-male. It's like, if I get a boner, am I gay, but she's still hot."

Hilarious comment. Definitely worth the scores IMO.

I saw this thread and looked up the CYBI recipe for Shakespeare Stout. The recipe looks really nuts...almost like there's a typo. Then, I saw what the judge said about it, so now I'm off to the store to go buy some. I've never had it. I have Pac Man yeast, and I'm looking for something to do with it; maybe this is it.

Alright, I just bought some Shakespeare Stout, and I'm tasting it. The judge is right. It's a weird tasting beer. It tastes like a black IPA. I'll drink it, but I don't really like black IPA's.

You know, the weird thing is, the LHBS owner told me it'd end up more like a porter, due to the low amount of roasted barley (I went with Jamil's lowered amount, rather than the full quantity John Maier gave in the interview.) Then, all of the judges comment on the roast character.

BeaverBarber, if you found the recipe without listening to the episode, you should really check it out. The Whirlfloc story is f'ing hilarious.

Cheers
