Part 1
I have been a real slacker and haven’t given credit to a great brewer who helped me get through a rough brewing patch…Jamil. I had posted some time ago (…) that I was having some serious difficulty with my brewing. I was getting the same off flavor over several batches. I went through many iterations trying to determine what was causing what I described as a soapy flavor. I posted on several forums (and thank all of you for your advice and help on those posts) talked to people at my local homebrew shop and club, but we just couldn’t figure out what was going on. I finally decided to email Jamil to see if he might have any suggestions. We shared several emails discussing my santitation practices, brewing practices, fermentation; you name it we talked about it. Finally, Jamil was nice enough to let me send him some of the bad beer and a little later responded back that it was possible that my beer may be infected with pideo or wild yeast and he ask about where I was brewing. It hit me at that minute that the batches that I had brewed were all brewed in my garage during the hot months in Central Texas with a fan blowing from the back of the garage over my uncovered cooling wort. I felt like such an idiot and could not believe that I had been so careless.
Jamil, thank you so very much for taking time to work with me to help get my brewing back on track and helping to figure out what was going wrong. I have since brewed several batches without the fan that have turned out great!! Secondly, I apologize for taking so long to get this out there and sharing with others what has gone on and how the issue was solved. I’ve heard you mention how much people have done for you in your brewing career and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate what you are giving back. As I said in one of my past email’s, I hope I get a chance to shake your hand and thank you in person at the Homebrewer’s Conference this summer.
Also thank you to everyone who pitched in to help me resolve this problem. So many people have put forth a lot of effort to help me out. I hope that I can begin to give back to the community that has done so much to help me make better beer. Thank you all!!! Not to mention all of the information that has helped me learn through this process presented on both The Session and The Jamil Show. Thank you guys so very much for all the hard work that you put into the shows and into the homebrewing community. Keep it up.
Here’s to all of you ladies and gentlemen that I have not only given your time to help be but to help others and be so open and free with your ideas and information…I raise my glass to each and every one of you…SALUD!!!
If you have any questions about the detail of what went on with my beers please feel free to drop me a line anytime.
Part 2
The Brewing Network infecting your household one pube at a time. Pube’s that’s right pube’s (in the voice of Sully)…if I may steal from some of the classic ad’s on the BN. Today began as a joyous day my Mother here home from a year in Africa. The twins happily playing with their grandmother and I enjoying a cup of coffee, while my wife runs a few errands. When in through the door she bursts and says “Get this the hell out of my hands it’s disgusting…I know where it came from and I don’t want to touch it…ew ew ew *gag* *gag*†So being the good husband that I am I rush over to save my wife from whatever the hell it was she was upset over.
Turned out it was a package, a gift for me, from my wife that she had ordered from…yep you guessed it the BN. My wife has listened to the show a few times with me…laughing and being disgusted by some of the things that go on. We’ve listened to archive episodes while traveling, so she knew the condition of the “Rat Padâ€. This package was supposed to be a gift for me for Christmas but I recognized Justin’s name and began to get all giddy. After noticing that it was indeed from the BN, I saw what was troubling my wife…Pube’s that’s right pube’s (see the pic below). I don’t know from which Brewcaster this originated from but I will loose sleep tonight in fear that it may have originated from Shat’s ass or JP nether regions
Thank you Brewing Network for sharing whatever little part of you that this is.….Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.
