In Alabama, yes. County Sheriffs are given a certain amount per day by the state per prisoner for food. By law, as long as they feed the prisoners in a way that meets the minimum standard, they are allowed to personally keep the difference if they spend less. This has proven to be very lucrative for some sheriffs over the years. Amazing but true.

Has anyone heard of any new developments concerning this? I live in Calhoun County, but work with some people from Blount County. They havn't heard anything locally. Thanks.

I wonder if this whole thing is really the DA pumping up the charges, throwing in the whole distilling nonsense, to get the guy to plea it down and not fight the homebrewing part. Sometimes they do this in AZ, if you are close to an extreme DUI they will offer to drop the worse offense in order for you to accep the lesser one. I guess this is a no-plea bargain state but if they drop a charge in a deal it counts...or something like that.

it does seem a bit odd that there hasn't been any more info on this.

Hopefully that's good news?

No real news in several days. He has hired a good criminal defense attorney and they are preparing a defense while the county is preparing to prosecute. I suspect it will be a while before anything interesting happens. I will keep the BN up to date as I hear anything new.

And besides, the media has other things to focus on: Obama's religion, the Katrina anniversary, 9/11, Beckapalooza. For the next couple of weeks, the rest of the world will cease to exist.

Didn't see a mention of this guy but Reason.TV just did a segment on homedistilling. Video features Yuseff from Ballast Point as well.
