Can I make a "dual/split batch"?

Sun Oct 16, 2011 5:56 pm

I am a partial extract brewer with a small kettle and I want to make a BIG beer, a double IPA w an SG of 1.082 and a lot of hops. My question is this, can I split all of my ingredients equally i half and do a simultaneous boil on both and then combine in the fermentor for better hop utilization?

Absolutely. I used this exact method several times before I got my turkey fryer/all grain set up. Works really well.

Just be sure to time your chilling process so one is not sitting around waiting to be chilled while the other is getting chilled.

Right, did the brew last night and all worked out well, dumped the small kettle into the large and used my immersion chiller, worked out well. Might have been able to do the whole batch in bigger kettle I borrowed, but pretty sure I would have boil over issues. Hit the OG almost perfectly, a tad over, not a horrible problem to have right, lol..
