Hops Poll - Whole -- Plug -- Pellet - Mix

Tue Apr 06, 2010 8:48 pm

So just curious what you typically or always use ...

I started with whole leaf hops and thats what I always have used ---- however I just did my first IPA and I can see for hoppy beers using pellets may be the way to go. Do any of you mix pellets - leaf - etc.

Too chicken to make the move to Hop pellets - do not want all the mess in the BK. I still use hop bags......

What techniques do people use to reduce the amount of hop trub that is passed from BK to CFC to fermentor?

I usually use whole hops or plugs. They help greatly to filter out the trub when siphoning to the fermenter. When I do use pellets it is always in combination with at least an ounce of whole hops for the same reason. On the rare occasions that I use all pellet hops, I get way too much hop debris into the fermenter.

Whirlpool and a racking cane that doesn't reach the bottom of the kettle. Some of the hops get over, but I just don't worry about it

I answered pellets, but I will occasionally use whole hops or plugs for dry hopping, but I'm really bad at remembering to dry hop beers I intended to
On tap 1: Dry Irish
On tap 2: El Jefeweizen
On tap 3: Vienna
kegged: Rye Amber, Belgian Dark Strong, CYBI Mirror Pond, Irish Red, RIS
