Brewing a partial mash with raw rye

Thu Mar 11, 2010 5:55 am

I get a lot of free grain from work, and just came home with about 5 lbs of rye. I am thinking that I am going to do a rye/wheat. This will be a partial mash, my system can hold about 4 lbs of grain in 1.75 gal of water. I was planning on using the rye and pale 6 row in the mash and getting the wheat from DME.
Question is: this is raw unmalted rye. If I grind the rye fairly fine, will there be enough enzymes in the 6 row to convert the rye, since rye gelatinization happens at 140-160F, within mash temps for the barley.
