Ruined stove top

Thu Dec 03, 2009 11:47 am

So my in-laws are making their annual visit to our side of the country. My wife can't get the residue from a boil over or two off of the stove. I've purchased a burner and won't be brewing on the stove anymore but does anyone have any suggestions to get the stove clean?

Is it one of those flat ceramic glass types or an older coil burner type?

On the glass flat ceramic deals you can use a safety razor. I always boil over my DME starter worts and spend part of the clean up time scraping.

Maybe a PBW / Oxiclean spray and soak?

Barkeeper's Friend is the bomb for cleaning ceramic cooktops. Lay it on as a damp paste, let sit for several minutes, then scrub/wipe off.

It's an older coil type burner...I will look into barkeepers friend though, it looks like they carry it at lowes.

I've never tried BKF on an enamel-over-steel surface; I have no idea if it will scratch. Might want to test in a inconspicuous spot first!

Is it just baked on wort or did the enamel get damaged? I've heard that can happen when using a very large pot on that kind of stove.

One thing that might be handy are those plastic scrapers for food you can find online or in stores.

They work well for scrubbing off labels, and getting the caked boilovers off of the enamel stove I had in my old apt. I just used Clorox home cleaning spray and let it sit for an hour or so, then scraped it off. You might need the heavy-duty stuff previously suggested, though.

What a recipe for disaster:

A) Your in-laws are coming (This is the base malt of disaster)
B) You fucked up the stove top with your hobby
C) Your wife can't get it clean, which means that you aren't even trying

Fermentation time: Two days max

Good luck, bro.
