Janet's Brown Ale?

Sat Jan 02, 2010 12:37 pm

When I enter Tasty's recipe into beersmith I'm coming up with 52.4 IBUs instead of the 63 in his recipe. I'm set for the Raegar IBU calc. The only thing I changed was boil size, upped to 7.5 gal to leave 6 gal at the end of the boil. Any ideas why the IBUs are off for beersmith? Should I up the bitterness to reach Tasty's numbers? Thanks.

Here's the recipe i entered into beersmith:

The difference is because Promash and Beersmith calculate the IBU contribution from mash hopping differently. I haven't found any science that would tell me which one is correct. In fact, some say that no IBUs carry over from the mash hop through the boil. I wouldn't change the recipe, just make a 52.4 Beersmith-IBU beer. Then enjoy.
yep, yep, yep, yep

Thanks Tasty. I thought it might be something like that. Made the extract version from BCS about a year ago. Great recipe! Can't wait to try the all grain version.
