Old scuba tank for CO2?

Hi all,
Listening to the archive of last night's show and kicking myself that I couldn't listen live.
Over the weekend, I scored a big single scuba tank and am wondering if I can put a valve on to use it for CO2. The threaded inlet for the current valve looks to measure about 1 1/4 inches in diameter - are the valves for CO2 that big? I'm also wondering if anyone knows whether scuba tanks are made for taking the same (or more) pressure than your average CO2 tank.
Any help on this would be welcomed.

Sorry, I can't answer you questions, but I doubt you'll be able to find anyone who'll want to fill it for you.

I'm pretty sure SCUBA tanks are used at 2500-3000psi when full. CO2 is only around 1000psi so I'd guess the tank itself could take it.

Whether the threads are interchangable between O2 and Co2 may be a whole different story.

As a diver I can tell you the standard 80 liter tank (steel or aluminum) is bigger than a 20# CO2 tank, but less than your larger sized welding tanks. It should be a very nice sized tank for this purpose if you can get the appropriate regulator and gauges.

I'd take it to a commercial gas/welding supply place and see if they have what you need, you may be in luck. There are at least 2 different standards for how those tanks are setup for their threads/attachements but I'm sure a pro could test and certify it for you and get you what you need. Interesting idea, let us know how that turns out.

you could sell the scuba tank and use the proceeds for a more appropriate C02 tank. the thing I like about those is you just exchange 1 for 1 with the gas guys. no waiting.

kinda on the same subject. My sister inlaw owned a party/gift store for a while. After the buisness closed they had 4 heleium tanks. I did the tank for tank exchange at my local welding supply store and I now have a 20 lb co2 tank. $24 bucks for the exchange. The other 3 are sitting in the garage.
