More kegs than space, but got the beer to fill

Sat Jul 19, 2008 7:31 pm

I am trying to figure out what to do with a batch of IPA I have coming up. I have 4 kegs in the chest freezer, and unfortunately no more space for another. I got an additional keg this week, but never really thought about the next step.

So here are the options i was thinking about:

1) unhook the co2 tank from the kegs in the freezer and carbonate the extra keg outside the chest freezer to the appropriate carbonation for several days/week, store in basement until one of the others dies, then rehook my c02 tank up to the chest freezer kegs

2) purge keg with a blast of co2 after beer transferred to get rid of any oxygen in top, then store like a conditioning tank...not properly carbonated for serving....

3) whatever else you guys reccomend.... [Wink]

I want to get it out of the primary so i can start using it (it has been in there for 3 weeks)

Got more beer to make!!!!

1. fill the keg with ipa, add priming sugar, shake, drink one of the other kegs while this one natural carbonates in you basement.

2. buy a bigger chest freezer
3. send extra keg of IPA to Thirsty Mallard, he'll take one for the team.

I do either 1 or 2 depending on my mood or situation. I normally have 3 or 4 kegs of beer waiting their turn in the kegerator. I have a couple extra CO2 tanks and regulators. Any more I keep one cranked up to about 28-30# for carbonating at room temperature, adjusting the pressure according to the charts. When I keg a beer I purge the keg and then hook up the gas and let it sit for a week or two. When the keg finally goes into the kegerator, the pressure finally balances out by the time it gets down to temperature.

If I brew so often I can let it sit that long to carb, I will roll the keg around with the gas hooked up until I can no longer hear the gas flow. I then move the gas over to the new keg and do the same. I then mark the kegs that they are not fully carbed.

Thanks for the reply to both of you. I would like a second co2 tank to have hanging around for purging, etc...but don't yet have the dedicated loot to get one. Perhaps around christmas. I will probably do as you mention, purging it with a psi kick and then letting it age

I'm kind of in the same situation, I've got 10 gal. of Amber ready to keg and only room for 1 keg in my fridge.
I'm just going to bottle condition one of them and let it sit at room temp until I have the cold storage space.

I'm about to buy a T w/ a check and ball valve so i can purge w/o opening my fridge to get to the manifold.
