Recomend a smoker???

Wed Feb 15, 2012 4:09 pm

I am looking to upgrade my smoker. I have been using the Brinkman electric smoker for over two years and although I have had some good food it is past its prime. So I am looking for recommendations, I would like to be able to control the temp. I have no idea what is better propane, electric or charcoal. I must say that I lean towards the first two so my wife can use it but if the latter is best she will learn. As far as price goes, $200 TO $400 MAX. Like I said, my only experience is with this one smoker so I’m looking to you all for help here.

Thanks
Tim

I've heard nothing but great things about the green eggs.

I can't argue with that, but I will expand it to say a komodo style cooker. I have a Big Steel Keg (http://amzn.to/xJSHNv), though it looks like when Broil King bought the line they changed the name and I'm not sure what else (http://amzn.to/AzryxJ)

I really drool when I see a buddy's Primo (http://amzn.to/yjOXaY). It's big enough that he can have half indirect and the other half direct heat. When I want to switch I have to add/remove a diffuser

I was watching America's Test Kitchen and they recommended the Weber Mountain Smoker. They liked the Green Egg but scoffed at the huge price tag.

I have had this for 5 years and I absolutely love it. Once you get use to it, controlling the temp. is a breeze. I started out using the ol’ probe thermometer through the potato method, but now it is unnecessary. I did a modify it a couple ways. I welded brackets around the seal and put high-temp stove rope around it to seal it up nicely. I also attatched a dryer vent tube to bring the chimney down to grill level. Last thing I did was to put an adjustable baffle on the bottom to regulate the heat a bit better.

For me, the price was right and it required minimal upgrading.
Here are a few morsels from it.

Thanks all for the advise. I ended up going with an electric on as there is no way my wife is going to deal with charcoal / wood and watching the heat. I hope that I can get her to love smoked / BBQ food and then graduate to a true smoker. Any good recipes....
Thanks
