I'm planning on putting together a gift of commercial beers that can be aged for my dad. I am considering either 12 bombers that would age well, or 2 each of 6 different beers, so that he could try them as is, then try them after aging to compare.

So far, I'm thinking about:

Alaskan Smoked Porter
DeSchutes Abyss


Any suggestions or ideas for other beers?

I put away a sixer of Sierra Nevada's Bigfoot every year, as well as some Thomas Hardy.

Good call. My dad loves the bigfoot, but has never aged any as far as I know. And the Thomas Hardy seems like a good bet, although I have not tried any yet.

Trader Joe's '09 Vintage Ale is on the shelves now. Haven't tasted it yet but these beers have been good in the past. Picked up a bottle yesterday. $4.99 for 9% abv dark ale brewed by Unibroue for TJ's.

Yeah, I've always thought that beer is a great deal. But I'm getting a little snobby with this one since it is a gift, and having a beer that says Trader Joe's on it won't fit in my plans.

Goose Island Bourbon County Stout, if you can get it out there. Ages well.
