White IPA?

Normal IPA, Imperial IPA, Black IPA/CDA. Could you make a white IPA Using just a light base malt with some dextrine malt to give it some backbone and a higher mash temp? Crazy? Stupid?

It never hurts to try. However the "white" beers such as wits are "white" because of the yeast that is still in it. What you would end up with there is a really pale India Pale Ale... around 2 - 5 SRM. But that that doesn't make it white. Just Lite. I would still award you +5 creativity points. I'm sure it would be a very good extra hoppy beer.

I'm not sure if this blurs your idea for a White IPA too far towards a Belgian IPA, but you could keep with the dextrine and maybe add some torrified wheat for body and head. Also, for the cloudiness that might get you the white color, you could go with the American Hefe yeast and ferment as cold as possible to keep everything as clean as possible. Maybe west coast hops to hide the yeast character?
You might not get a white IPA, but you would end up with a great summer beer.

The last couple IPAs I've brewed have leaned to the lighter side of the SRM scale for sure... Maybe around 5 or 6... I did it bc I'm becoming a whore for hops (I figure they would shine thru a little more with less crystal) and also I'm sick of drinking amber colored ales :-/

Deschutes and Boulevard beat you to it. Theirs are actually witbier/IPA hybrids.

You guys will get to hear Larry talk about his (and Boulevard's) techniques for white IPAs this Sunday. Hopefully his insights will give you a good handle on how to design your own.

I think you guys took me too seriously when I said a white ipa. However great idea with the hef yeast! I just might try that. I guess I should have said yellow ipa
