I attended a Society for the Pursuit of Hoppiness meeting at Avery Brewing Co. the other day and they gave out a few of their recipes scaled to a 5 gallon batch size. Just thought I would share.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing. Maharaja and the IPA are two of my favorite beers.

I was just going to say something about that... seems pretty high! Hey, they seem to know what they're doing.

Thanks for posting these recipes BadRock! I am a big fan of their beers. I had a few questions though that I hope you can answer (because you were there!). First off, did they mention any mash temperatures? The Hog Heaven, Maharaja, and IPA all have relatively low F.G.'s, so I would assume 150-152*? Did they happen to mention anything about that? Secondly, the IPA when entered into ProMash only has 25 IBU's (.25 oz. Columbus @60 and .27 Columbus @ 30 min.)! Is this correct, or could there have been a typo? I personally have never had their plain 'ole IPA, so it could be correct as far as I know? Just seems awfully low for an IPA to me. And lastly, do they boil for 90 minutes or 60? I had another Maharaja clone recipe that was very close and it was 90 minutes for the boil. Thanks again for posting these! :jnj

I don't know the answers to these questions but you can probably get them answered by writing to steve@averybrewing.com. Just reference the recipes that were handed out during the February, Society for the Pursuit of Hoppiness meeting. Good luck and let us know what you find out.

I've been talking to Steve about their IPA and what Steve is telling me is that they mash at 149F. He mentioned to me that they ferment at 70F. 74F seems pretty high to me. Also, their house yeast strain comes from Wyeast 1028. And Yes... they do a 90 minute boil.

It also looks like they've reformulated the IPA's knockout hops. The IPA used to be Columbus, Centennial, Crystal and Simcoe.
